Directed by: Zack Snyder Year: 2007 Written by: Zack Snyder, Kurt Johnstad Based on the comic book by Frank Miller Starring: Gerald Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Dominic West, Rodrigo Santoro Reviewed by: Kate Based off the comic book by Frank Miller, Zack Snyder directs a masterpiece. King Leonidas, the King of Sparta, leads 300 of his bravest men to their imminent doom against hundreds of thousands of Persians, led by King Xerxes. Xerxes thinks he's a God, and looks like he could be Goliath's twin brother. The storyline is near flawless, and Butler plays Leonidas with tremendous passion. The visuals are stunning, not just the battle scenes, but the whole movie. They used the same concept as Sin City, but improved greatly. Lena Headey played a strong Queen, one devoted to her husband, her family, her ideals, and her country. Her presence made 300 more than just a guy movie, although there was no lack of blood and graphic violence. I've read the graphic novel and the battle scenes did it justice. Frank Miller is an amazing artist, and I'm sure he was pleased when he saw the finished product. Snyder's movie brought the graphic novel to real time fighting in a spectacular way. The movie also had a political undertone. You got to see the sacrifices the Spartans made for freedom. Xerxes had slaves and would have made the Spartans his slaves had he conquered Greece. The Arcadians played a minor role in the battle, teaming up with the Spartans, but the Spartans did the majority of the work. Overall, a wonderful movie. I got dragged into it and thought it wouldn't be that good and boy was I surprised. 10 hearts out of 10.
