Directed by: Michael Haneke Year: 1997 Written by: Michael Haneke Starring: Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Mühe, Arno Frisch, Frank Giering Language: German (with English sub-titles) Reviewed by: J.J. Funny Games is a story about a young man who comes over to an average, suburban family's vacation home to borrow some eggs and never leaves. As simple as it sounds, it's one of the more dark movies I've seen, and I've seen a lot of dark movies. The movie starts with the nice family driving out into the county with smiles. In the background, they play some screaming heavy metal garbage, crap the other critics here would probably like. As the family is settling into the vacation home, a young man comes over to borrow some eggs. Seems simple enough. The thing is, he never leaves. Then his friend comes over and he won't leave either. I won't give too much away, because Haneke's going to remake this movie with bigger name actors. The thing is, the actors he used were fine and the production was adequate. Haneke's misanthropy shows though, and is what makes the movie shine. Plus, you'll see the one thing in this movie that you'll never see in an American flick. I won't give it away. Rent this one before the remake comes out. 8 J's out of 10 |
