Little Miss Sunshine is a low-budget film about the chaotic road trip of a dysfunctional family. The parents hit rock bottom after they realize they have no money. The teenage son has refused to talk for nine months. The grandpa takes drugs and loves dirty, non-airbrushed, porn. The uncle’s male student didn’t love him back, so he tried to commit suicide but failed. The only non-loser of the bunch is seven-year-old Olive. She’s a nerdy-looking girl who qualified as a finalist in a beauty pageant of very young Barbies. Although the family has no money, they don’t want to disappoint their daughter, so they pack into their van with a broken clutch, and they drive from New Mexico to California.

The best thing about the movie is Steve Carell, who plays the gay uncle. He delivered an A+ performance in another one of his odd roles. The movie is definitely original with some good dialogue and a few funny parts. It’s the kind of movie that some will call genius, others will say it’s decent, but it’d be hard to say it sucked. I was mildly entertained, so I’ll give it five damned souls (out of 10).

Rating - 5 damned souls out of 10
