Directed by: Alfonso Cuarón Year: 2001 Language: Spanish (English sub-titles) Country: Mexico Starring: Maribel Verdú, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal Reviewed by: The Zombieslayer It's pretty bad when America is more prudish than Mexico. This was a big deal to a lot of Americans when this hit the states, about the blatant nudity and sexuality. Here, we see a lot of real sex, in its both beauty and dirtiness (by both definitions of dirty). But contrary to popular opinion, this movie wasn't about sex. It was about death. My wife and I saw the movie in the theatre and noticed dozens of instances of death, and you got to see the cold callousness of a country that looks the other way at death. Death is an everyday event there, and it proves one of my other points that when there are too many people, people mean less until they become meaningless. Mexico is overpopulated, and death means little there. I'll have to ask Cuarón next time I see him if this was intentional or if I was reading into it. Oh, you want to a quick synopsis of what the movie was about? Well, say something instead of letting me ramble on next time. Two young college boys are best friends. One comes from an upper-class background and the other is relatively poor. Yet, they're like brothers. They hit on an older woman whose husband is having an affair. So she plays it off like she's flirting with them to get back at her cheating husband. In reality, she's doing this for one last hurrah for she has a dark secret. See the movie. Some of the scenes are hard to watch, not just for the raw (and sometimes gross) sex but for the constant foreshadows of death. But Cuarón is a fantastic director. Plus, Verdú is pretty fucking fine, as seen in this clip from the movie.
One of these days, I'm going to see some other movies Cuarón did. He's definitely the best of the Harry Potter directors. Cuarón's strength is his character development. He creates real characters who you could either relate to or you could say "that character reminds me of someone." 9 dead zombies out of 10 |
